Albums to Look Forward To: January/February 2017

Holy shit guys. It’s 2017. I can’t believe it. Just think of all the fucking wonderful music that came out over the last 365 days. Yeah, sure everything that wasn’t music was a clusterfuck of awful shit. But damn. Beyoncé, Solange, Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino, Deerhoof, DAVID MOTHERFUCKING BOWIE RIP, and so many others. I can’t even begin to describe just how ecstatic I get whenever I think about this last year. With any luck, as art thrives under oppression, 2017 will get even better.

The Flaming Lips – Oczy Mlody (Jan 13)

oczy-mlody

I skipped out on the terror–I just never found the time to actually dive into it. I regret the shit out of it, and who knows, I might just dive back to it if Oczy Mlody impresses me enough. They might have had a pretty big part to play in that abhorrent Miley Cyrus album that dropped in, what, 2015? It had to have been 2015. But I have faith that this album might still be pretty great.

The xx – I See You (Jan 13)

i-see-you-the-xx

I have never been an xx fan. Just seemed like music that was made for the kind of people that spend all of their time at the club, not the kind of music that an introverted music geek would sit and listen to. But then Jamie xx put out In Colour in 2015. I listened to the shit outta that album. The absolute shit out of it. So many creative and catchy pop tunes. Even when there weren’t vocals, the melodies that Jamie was able to create out of his synths were breathtaking. If there is even half of the melodic gold that was on In Colour on this album, this is a record I’ll be repeating throughout the year.

Xiu Xiu – FORGET (Feb 24)

xiu-xiu-forget

So this last year, Xiu Xiu did a cover album of the music of the classic TV show, Twin Peaks. I almost laughed when I saw it. But it worked, really well. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised. The soundtrack to that show was bizarre in its own right, so it is a pretty natural fit for one of the most abstract bands around right now. I have no idea what they’re going to do on FORGET, but I know that it’s gonna be weird. It’s gonna be creepy. It’s going to give me nightmares, and I’m gonna love every minute of it.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Flying Microtonal Banana (Feb 24)

mad-bananas

Man, Nonagon Infinity made my fucking year. Everything I have heard from these guys is gold, even when they strip everything back and make acoustic music they’re just so full of delicious proggy energy. You can’t sit still and listen to these guys. And I mean, with an album title like Flying Microtonal Banana? Come on. That shit has to be mad bananas.

G.O.O.D. Music – Cruel Winter (Feb 28)

cruel-winter

Cruel Summer remains my favorite Hip-Hop collaboration album. I don’t care what anybody says. There are so many classic tracks on that fucking project. Mercy, To the World, Clique, New God Flow. Shit. I heard that Kanye was planning on putting this together. He even dropped that Champions track this last summer. Then nothing. No word. Will it actually come out on the 28th? Or will it get delayed to oblivion? Who knows? I just know I’m fucking pumped.

Novella – Change of State (Feb 17)

change-of-state

Some nice, relaxing shoegaze. Their debut, Land Gone, back in 2015 was one of my favorite albums that year. I know it’s nothing innovative, and they’re treading ground that was pretty fully explored in the 90s. But fuck you. I don’t care. Sometimes that’s what I want. And I want this album.

There are about a million other albums coming out over the next couple of months, and with any luck, there will be great albums that I’m not expecting at all. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
